Oral Hygiene

Oral hygiene is the foundation for healthy teeth and gums, with daily brushing and flossing the most essential components to keep everyone’s smiles at their strongest. Two regular checkups each year that include thorough professional cleaning and careful oral health assessment by your Victoria dentists increase your peace of mind—you can leave our office knowing that all is well with your smile. We’re also happy to offer quick, noninvasive laser cleanings at Comprehensive Family Dental. Not one single patient has confessed to missing the sound or sensation of old-school drilling and scraping!

Gum Disease

Gum disease weakens the tissues that hold your teeth in place and is usually caused by inconsistent brushing and flossing, which can lead to the buildup of bad bacteria (plaque) settling in on the teeth. Bleeding gums signal gingivitis, which is the earliest stage of gum disease. If you see blood on your toothbrush regularly, the Comprehensive Family Dental team will recommend an elevated oral hygiene routine and keeping semiannual appointments with us. If gum disease progresses, we may recommend additional deeper cleaning (scaling and root planing) to bring your gums back to health and prevent bone loss.

Oral Cancer Screenings

Oral cancer claims the life of one person every hour in the United States. Oral cancer is not only one of the fastest-growing types of cancer worldwide, it is extremely difficult to detect and diagnose until its later stages. With these facts in mind, Comprehensive Family Dental includes oral cancer screening in every routine adult hygiene appointment. The leading risk factor for oral cancer is HPV (human papillomavirus), followed by alcohol and tobacco use. To learn more about oral cancer, visit the Oral Cancer Foundation website and feel free to ask us questions any time.

Mouthguards & Bite Splints

Two million teeth are knocked out every year during contact sports play and practice because athletes skipped wearing a mouthguard. With the rising costs of missing tooth replacement and accompanying medical care for jaws, face, neck, and head, the price of a custom-fit mouthguard—and the peace of mind wearing one brings—seems comparatively low. The American Dental Association has noted that sports mouthguards save about a quarter-million teeth each year, and some studies have even shown wearing one can reduce the effects of concussion. Ask us about a mouthguard for your family’s star player!

Dental sealants consist of plastic material applied to the teeth with a brush, with special attention paid to the back teeth chewing surfaces that are the most decay-prone areas of the mouth. Sealants are so named because they “seal out” plaque and food, preventing decay and cavity formation before it begins. We use laser and air abrasion technology to assist with quick and easy sealant application, which can almost always be completed in a single appointment. Sealants are recommended for children and teenagers to keep developing teeth intact, but many adults can benefit from sealants as well.

Pediatric Dentistry

Your Victoria dental team welcomes pediatric patients as soon as they turn a year old or their first tooth erupts, whichever comes first. Oral hygiene is important from birth, since baby teeth are essential to ongoing healthy development, assisting with speaking, eating, and saving spaces for adult teeth in the mouth. Health education is part of patient care for all ages but getting kids to care about their teeth early on is key to establishing healthy oral hygiene habits for life. We discussed sealants above, and we will often recommend them to keep kids’ molars strong and free from decay.

Comprehensive Family Dental also pediatric root canal procedures, pulpectomy and pulpotomy. These procedures remove infection from and save those all-important baby teeth. We also offer in-office pediatric sedation, an uncommon service for the average family dental practice to have available. To learn more about our sedation dentistry options for all ages, please see our Specialty Services page or feel free to contact us with any questions.

*Dr. Rainey and Dr. Fritsche are general dentists performing pediatric dentistry services.
