Can You Straighten Teeth Without Braces?

Dr. Rainey has over 15 years of orthodontic experience, including advanced training in clear aligners, orthodontic expansion in children, and braces.  We design and 3d Print our own clear aligners in our office, and are able to straighten most cases of dental crowding with clear aligners.

Our Orthodontic Approach

Like any health issue, crooked or misaligned teeth affect more than just appearance. They can interfere with speech development, breathing, sleep, and the ability to eat a healthy, well-rounded diet. It’s our job to make sure your teeth straightening procedure addresses your overall health, including your breathing. Our orthodontic goal is always non-retractive and non extraction orthodontics for adults and children. This is because the traditional retractive orthodontic model may straighten teeth at the expense of the jaw size. We are passionate about orthodontics not only because of the beauty that we add with straight teeth create, but also because of the benefits to overall health and well being to the patient when we plan our orthodontic cases with our 3D Xray and knowledge of sleep and airway dentistry.

Clear Aligners
An Alternative to Traditional Braces

Clear aligners is another way to say “clear braces”. Like traditional braces, clear aligners are made to move teeth , only they do so without using any metal. Clear aligners are discreet, comfortable, and preferred by many professionals and adults for their almost-invisible appearance and predictable, tried-and-true results. Wearers love the convenience of clear aligners fabricated just for them. Many patients would love to straighten their teeth but are put off by the bulkiness and “teenage” stigma associated with traditional metal braces. Aligners are removed for eating, drinking, cleaning, and special occasions like that all-important photo op.

Comprehensive Family Dental is proud to offer clear aligner orthodontics that we fabricate right here in the office by 3d Printing, as well as the popular Invisalign® clear aligner orthodontics system.

Invisalign®
A clear alternative to braces

Invisalign is the clear aligner orthodontics system with the highest level of brand recognition in the dental marketplace. With over 7 million straightened smiles and extensive, successful marketing, it’s hard to argue with Invisalign’s results.

How Do Clear Aligners Work?

If you are interested in clear aligners, we’d love to chat! First, we’ll meet with you for a consultation to see if you are a good candidate for this type of orthodontic treatment. If you are, we can discuss treatment, time, goals, and expenses. Every orthodontic case isn’t appropriate for clear aligners, but many are—we will be able to tell you at the time of your consultation with us.

Whether you choose our clear aligners or those of Invisalign, you will wear a series of aligners for 12-14 months on average. The aligners are worn 22-24 hours a day and depending on your individual treatment plan, you will transition into the next set of aligners every few weeks.

What Can Clear Aligners Fix?

  • Crooked teeth
  • Crossbite
  • Open bite
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Overbite
  • Underbite

Invisalign Teen®

Clear aligners aren’t just for adults! We offer Invisalign Teen, perfect for teens that don’t want braces disrupting their life. The process and benefits are the same for teens. The one difference is the teen aligners have small blue compliance dots that tell parents if the teen is wearing the aligner like they should.

Airway-Focused Orthodontics

Early Intervention is key.

Airway-focused orthodontics is a form of early interceptive orthodontic treatment, where we address underdeveloped jaw size prior to the eruption of all the permanent teeth. Our goal is to guide the growth of the upper and or lower jaw to make enough space for the eruption of all the permanent teeth, as well as room for the tongue. If you know of someone who had teeth removed for orthodontics, chances are that their jaws just did not develop wide enough to fit all the teeth. Orthodontic expansion can widen the jaws so that when the larger permanent teeth erupt they are more likely to fit.

Children should be evaluated by the age of four to see if there is a bone problem (orthopedic) or a tooth problem (orthodontic). If your child’s upper jaw is too narrow, or the lower jaw is underdeveloped, this will usually require a device called an expander to correct the problem. Minor tooth crowding can also be corrected early on in some instances with these appliances.

Orthodontic Expansion
The case above we expanded with one fixed expander per arch. The teeth straightened up on their own because we expanded the jaws so that the teeth could fit.

Other benefits of early orthodontic treatment or interceptive orthodontics include:

  • Improves profiles, smiles and self-esteem
  • Corrects harmful habits, such as thumb sucking and tongue thrusting
  • Expander develop the arches and make more room for the tongue
  • Improves speech
  • Reduces the amount of time spent in fixed braces and frequently eliminates the need for the extraction of permanent teeth
  • Increases nasal breathing which improves health
  • Eliminates airway constriction
  • Creates beautiful broad smiles by developing the arches
  • Eliminates grinding of the teeth at night
  • Prevents headaches and earaches

Braces

Classic approach, predictable results

The wonderful thing about traditional braces is their tried-and-true reputation for amazing results. Braces are often a rite of passage for teens (many of our teenage patients love the way they look in their braces–they think they’re cool!). Braces work by applying pressure on the teeth, gradually moving them into the desired place. Traditional braces can often remedy more complex orthodontic issues that clear aligners may not be able to solve. If you are interested in discussing the differences or assessing your personal pros and cons, simply schedule an appointment to talk to us!

Propel® for Treatment Acceleration

One of the challenges of teeth straightening is the time required to move tooth roots. With today’s technology, we are now able to speed up any orthodontic process by up to 62%. An innovative system called Propel uses a technique called Micro-Osteoperforation™ (MOPs) to accelerate tooth movement. MOPs uses the body’s own biology to stimulate movement by strategic placement of small dimples that increase the rate bone can transition and allows teeth to straighten at an acellerated rate.

Why we love Propel

  • Less time in orthodontics
  • Little to no recovery time
  • Procedure completes in a single visit
  • Can work with any kind of ortho treatment (braces or clear aligners)
